What is the Goods & Services Tax (GST)?
A gst calculator is a critical accounting and commercial tool that computes the tax liability, net base value, and gross invoice total for consumer transactions. Implemented in India on July 1, 2017, the Goods and Services Tax replaced a convoluted web of cascading indirect taxes—including Value Added Tax (VAT), Central Excise Duty, Service Tax, and Octroi—unifying the national economy under the principle of "One Nation, One Tax."
Whether you are a freelance consultant billing clients, a small business merchant filing GSTR-3B monthly returns, or a consumer checking a retail purchase invoice, our calculator computes intrastate CGST/SGST splits and interstate IGST liabilities instantly.
The GST Calculation Formulas
GST Exclusive (Add Tax): GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100
Total Invoice Amount = Base Price + GST Amount
GST Inclusive (Remove Tax): GST Amount = Total Price - [Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))]
Base Net Price = Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))
Step-by-Step Worked GST Examples
Step 1: Calculate Total GST: (₹10,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹1,800.00
Step 2: Intrastate Split: CGST (9%) = ₹900.00 | SGST (9%) = ₹900.00
Step 3: Total Billed to Client: ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800.00
Step 1: Calculate Base Price: ₹11,800 / (1 + 0.18) = ₹11,800 / 1.18 = ₹10,000.00
Step 2: Calculate Embedded Tax: ₹11,800 - ₹10,000 = ₹1,800.00 GST

Understanding CGST, SGST, and IGST
- CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on an intrastate transaction (goods manufactured and sold within the same state).
- SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): Collected simultaneously by the respective State Government on the same intrastate transaction (rates are split exactly 50/50).
- IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): Levied on interstate transactions (selling from Maharashtra to Karnataka) or international import goods, collected by the Centre and shared with the destination consuming state.
Input Tax Credit (ITC) Mechanics
The defining economic strength of the GST framework is Input Tax Credit. Under previous tax laws, business taxes cascaded ("tax on tax"). Under GST, a business that purchases ₹1,00,000 of raw materials (paying ₹18,000 in input GST) and sells finished goods for ₹1,50,000 (collecting ₹27,000 in output GST) only pays the net difference:
Net Tax Payable to Government = Output Tax - Input Tax Credit = ₹27,000 - ₹18,000 = ₹9,000
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
For GST Exclusive amounts, GST Amount = (Base Price * GST Rate) / 100, and Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount. For GST Inclusive prices, GST Amount = Total Price - [Total Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)].
For intrastate transactions (within the same state), GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For interstate transactions (between two different states), the entire tax is levied as IGST (Integrated GST) collected by the central government.
India's GST structure features four main rate tiers: 5% (essential commodities and packaged food), 12% (standard consumer goods and processed food), 18% (most services, electronics, and capital goods), and 28% (luxury items, automobiles, and aerated drinks).
Input Tax Credit (ITC) allows registered businesses to reduce the tax they have already paid on raw material inputs and business purchases from the output GST liability collected on their sales, eliminating the cascading effect of tax on tax.
Most clinical healthcare services provided by recognized medical practitioners and hospitals are exempt from GST in India. However, non-clinical cosmetic procedures and certain hospital room rents exceeding ₹5,000 per day attract GST.
Businesses manufacturing or selling goods with an annual turnover exceeding ₹40 Lakh (₹20 Lakh for special category states), and service providers with annual turnover exceeding ₹20 Lakh (₹10 Lakh for special states), must register for GST.
